Research in career tactics has largely ignored whether the tactics of women differ from those of men or are equally effective. This research compared tactics of women and men at two levels, and in two types of organizations and positions. Tactics, situation, and background were found to predict success. Men and women differed in their evaluations of the importance of some tactic factors, as well as on their descriptions of success. Theoretical and practical implications are suggested
