Entre le 1er février 2002 et le 31 octobre 2002, 82 patients âgés de plus de 70 ans ont bénéficié d'une évaluation nutritionnelle dès leur admission dans le service de gériatrie du CHU de Nancy. 44% des patients ont été jugés dénutris ; ils présentaient un indice de masse corporelle inférieur à 21 kg/m2. Parmi les causes de malnutrition, c'est l'hypercatabolisme qui est la plus importante puisqu'elle est présente chez près de 80% des patients; ce phénomène est très fréquemment associé à une carence d'apport alimentaire et accentue sensiblement la dénutrition de la personne âgée.
