La compréhension et le contrôle des interactions intermoléculaires est d'une importance fondamentale dans les domaines de la reconnaissance moléculaire et de l'ingénierie cristalline, ainsi que dans les systèmes biologiques. Parmi les contacts faibles les plus fréquents qui lient les molécules dans les solides organiques nous trouvons la liaison halogène, la liaison chalcogène, et la liaison hydrogène faible.
