Based on observations and evaluations of the various approaches and interactions between medical practitioners and their patients, both in Japan and in Australia, this paper offers some insights for medical students into the processes and problems experienced in this unique communication relationship. This paper also outlines how medical students and practitioners can raise their awareness of the dynamics of their relationships with their patients and increase their effectiveness in their chosen calling of medicine
