Shift work and travel across time zones affect sleep and alertness negatively, and hence influence accident rate. Self-selected work hours, contextual, and environmental factors affect sleepiness, but it is unclear exactly how. It is important to fully understand the mechanisms behind sleepiness in order to be able to apply countermeasures and develop shift schedules and work situations more adapted to human physiology.
