Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is associated with increased mortality in certain malignant tumours. Breast cancer is the most common and a shared aetiology has been suggested. In a register-based nested case-control study, we compared breast cancer in patients with and without a previous operation for pHPT. Neither tumour size or stage, nor lymph node metastases differed, nor did breast cancer specific survival. Longer life expectancy and a lower threshold for referral of pHPT patients to surgery have lead to an increasing proportion of elderly patients. In a large cohort study of the period 1961-2004, all-cause mortality within 30 days and one year after surgery for pHPT was analysed. The entire Swedish popul...
