Thioredoxin and related systems regulate many biological processes in diverse species. In mammals, in addition to protecting against oxidative damage, they also play key roles as regulators of transcription factors, signaling cascades and immune responses. Many discoveries made in mammalian models have contributed to the description of numerous functions for the thioredoxin and related systems.
