Use of space, nest searching and nest monitoring in two brood parasites: the Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis) and the Screaming Cowbird (M. rufoaxillaris)

Las hembras de tordos parásitos (género Molothrus) depositan sus huevos en los nidos de otras especies (los hospedadores), los cuales se encargan de incubar los huevos y alimentar a los pichones. El parasitismo ocurre al amanecer y el resto de la mañana sería utilizada para la búsqueda de nidos a ser parasitados los días siguientes. Un problema a resolver por las hembras parásitas es encontrar y recordar la ubicación de nidos apropiados a los cuales retornar posteriormente para poner sus huevos. En este trabajo se estudió el uso del espacio en dos especies parásitas de cría, una generalista, el Tordo Renegrido (Molothrus bonariensis) y una especialista, el Tordo Pico Corto (M. rufoaxillaris) mediante la instrumentación de animales con radiotransmisores VHF. Se estudiaron: 1) el tamaño y constancia de las áreas de acción de machos y hembras de ambas especies, 2) la secuencia temporal de las visitas de las hembras parásitas a los nidos de los hospedadores, y 3) el uso de dormideros comunales. Por otro lado, y dado que los eventos de parasitismo ocurren dentro de los 30 minutos que preceden al amanecer, se realizaron estudios morfológicos de retinas de machos y hembras de ambas especies parásitas para describir posibles adaptaciones a la visión en bajas intensidades lumínicas. Las hembras de M. bonariensis y M. rufoaxillaris presentaron áreas de acción relativamente constantes en el tiempo (i.e. existió una alta superposición de las áreas de acción en días consecutivos) y visitaron los nidos de sus hospedadores antes de parasitarlos. La frecuencia de visitas de las hembras de Tordo Pico Corto a los nidos de su principal hospedador (el Músico, Agelaioides badius) fue mayor que la de las hembras de Tordo Renegrido a uno de sus hospedadores más frecuentes (la Calandria Grande, Mimus saturninus) lo cual es consistente con diferencias en el comportamiento de puesta de los hospedadores (inicio de puesta impredecible en A. badius). Ambas especies parásitas utilizaron dormideros comunales cercanos a las áreas de acción en las que las hembras buscaban nidos. En ambas especies, los días en que ocurrieron eventos de parasitismo las hembras volaron directamente desde el dormidero al nido del hospedador y ello ocurrió en una estrecha ventana temporal antes del amanecer. Por último, resultados preliminares sobre las posibles adaptaciones a la visión a bajas intensidades lumínicas indican que no existen diferencias entre machos y hembras, y entre el Tordo Renegrido y el Tordo Pico Corto, en la densidad de conos simples rojos y verdes y en la densidad de bastones de la retina.Brood parasitic females (genus Molothrus) lay their eggs in the nests of other species (the hosts) , which incubate the eggs and rear the young. Parasitism occurs at dawn and the rest of the morning would be used to search for nests to parasitize on subsequent days. One of the problems parasitic females have to solve is finding and remembering the location of appropriate nests to which they can later return to lay their eggs. In this thesis, I studied the use of space in two brood parasites: the Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis), which is a generalist species, and the Screaming Cowbird (M. rufoaxillaris), a specialist species. Using VHF radiotelemetry I studied: 1) the size and constancy of ranges of males and females of both species, 2) the temporal sequence of visits to host nests by parasitic females, and 3) the use of communal roosts. Additionally, as parasitism events occur around 30 minutes before dawn, morphological studies of sections of retinas of both males and females of M. bonariensis and M. rufoaxillaris were carried out in order to study potential adaptations to vision in dim light. There was extensive overlap in the morning ranges of individual females of M. bonariensis and M. rufoaxillaris between consecutive days, and they visited host nests at least one time before parasitizing them. The frequency of visits of M. rufoaxillaris females to the nest of their main host, Agelaioides badius, was greater than that of M. bonariensis females to the nest of the host they parasitize more frequently in the area, which is consistent with the different laying behaviours shown by both hosts (unpredictable start of laying in A. badius). Both parasitic species used communal roosts near the area where females searched for nests. In both species, the day when parasitic events occurred, the females flew directly from the roost to the host nest in a short time window before sunrise. Lastly, preliminary results on potential adaptations to vision in dim light showed that there are no differences between sexes, or between M. bonariensis and M. rufoaxillaris, in the density of red and green cones and in the density of rods in the retina.Fil:Scardamaglia, Romina Clara.
