En el aprendizaje asociativo, la reactivación de la memoria por la presentación de un recordatorio puede inducir dos procesos mnésicos aparentemente opuestos, la reconsolidación o la extinción. En esta Tesis describimos un switch molecular entre mecanismos de transcripción que se inducen diferencialmente en el hipocampo en la determinación de dichos procesos. Encontramos que NF-kB es necesario para la reconsolidación, mientras que para la extinción su activación se ve restringida por la fosfatasa calcineurina. El factor de transcripción NFAT es activado a su vez por calcineurina durante la extinción, y es necesario para que este proceso tenga lugar.
