Entangled photon states : time-resolved measurements

En esta Tesis se realizaron experimentos originales dirigidos a responder preguntas pendientes en el área de la fundamentación de la mecánica cuántica. En particular, se presenta el primer estudio experimental de teorías realistas locales no ergódicas que aprovechan el coincidence-loophole y/o efectos de memoria. En los tests realizados se estudiaron los distintos mecanismos que permiten generar una coincidencia, en los que se sustentan estas teorías para reproducir, a través de mecanismos clásicos, las predicciones de la mecánica cuántica. Para la realización de estos tests se emplearon pares de fotones entrelazados en polarizaci ón generados por fluorescencia paramétrica y se registraron los tiempos de detección de cada fotón (time-stamping). Es importante destacar que en todos los tests las coincidencias se determinaron una vez finalizado el experimento, variando a voluntad la ventana de coincidencias. En la primera parte de esta Tesis se armó una fuente continua de pares de fotones entrelazados en polarización y se refutó un modelo de realismo local simple que se sustenta en el coincidence-loophole. En la segunda parte se empleó una fuente pulsada de fotones correlacionados producidos en forma de pulsos de nanosegundos. Este es el primer experimento realizado con estas caracter ísticas en el ámbito internacional. Para la realización de este experimento se construyó un láser de estado totalmente sólido de Nd:YVO4 triplicado en frecuencia con un diseño original que emite pulsos con una duración de nanosegundos con una repetición de hasta 100 kHz. Empleando este láser se realizó, además, el primer estudio experimental de las coincidencias accidentales en el régimen pulsado usando la técnica de time-stamping. Para efectuar los diferentes tests también fue necesario registrar los tiempos de detección de todos los pulsos de bombeo, los que permiten establecer el intervalo de tiempo en el que se espera encontrar un par de fotones. Los resultados obtenidos en esta segunda etapa tampoco mostraron ninguna evidencia del coincidence-loophole o de efectos relacionados, refutando o, al menos, imponiendo nuevas y muy severas restricciones, a esta clase de teorías.In this Thesis we present original experiments aimed to answer remaining open questions in the area of the foundations of quantum mechanics. In particular, we present the first experimental study of non-ergodic local theories which takes advantages of the coincidenceloophole and/or memory effects. In the tests we study the different (local realistic) ways the quantum mechanics predictions can be reproduced if the expected time of detection of each particle is fully unknown. For the realization of these tests, we use polarization-entangled pairs of photons generated by parametric fluorescence, and we record the time of the detection of each single photon (time-stamping). It is important to stress that in all the tests the number of coincidences are determined a long time after the experiment has ended, and that the size of the coincidence window can be varied at will. In the first part of this Thesis, we built a continuous source of polarization-entangled pairs of photons and refute a simple local realist model that exploits the coincidence loophole. In the second part, we built a pulsed source of correlated photons, by pumping the nonlinear crystals with a ns-pulse laser. This is the first measurement of the violation of the Bell’s inequalities performed with these characteristics (i.e., pulse separation much longer than the pulse duration) at the international level. For the realization of this experiment we built an all-solid-state Nd:YVO4 laser (third harmonic) of original design, providing 100-ns pulses with a repetition up to 100 kHz. With this laser we make, besides, the first experimental study of the accidental coincidences in the pulsed regime using the time-stamping technique. In the final tests, the times of detection of each single detected photon, as well as the times of arrival of each pumping pulse, are recorded. This allows defining the interval of time a “signal” photon (as opposed to “noise” photon) is expected to be detected. No evidence of the existence of the coincidence-loophole or related effects is found.
