El herbicida más utilizado en Argentina es el N-phosphonomethylglycine (nombre comercial: Glifosato). Éste puede ser rápida y completamente degradado por los microorganismos, por lo que el tiempo de vida en el suelo es bajo. Sin embargo, el comportamiento del glifosato puede variar en función de las características físicas y químicas del suelo sobre el que se aplique. Por lo tanto, el tiempo de permanencia en el suelo podría ser mayor. Es importante estudiar el comportamiento de este herbicida dada las potenciales alteraciones que puede provocar en las comunidades de microorganismos que viven en el suelo y en algunos de sus procesos.
