Los equipos de descargas arco en vacío son una fuente de plasma atractiva para la producción de películas delgadas. En estos equipos se produce un intenso jet de plasma metálico formado por iones de relativamente alta energía que son producidos con mucha eficiencia en la superficie del cátodo. Sin embargo, estos arcos también producen macropartículas de material catódico derretido que son depositadas en los sustratos. La presencia de estas macropartículas aumenta la porosidad y rugosidad de los recubrimientos afectando las propiedades de los films.
