2013-06-28Surface-selective vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy (SFG) has been used to investigate the structure, orientation, and dynamics of molecules at metal, semiconductor, and aqueous interfaces. In the first part of the thesis, SFG has been used to elucidate the molecular orientation of methyl groups terminating Si(111). Both the symmetric and asymmetric stretches of the surface-bound methyl group showed a pronounced azimuthal anisotropy of the 3-fold symmetry in registry with the signal from the Si(111) substrate, indicating that the propeller-like rotation of the methyl groups was hindered at room temperature.
