A Sedan Chair, China, ca. 1905-1914

Black and white lantern slide showing a sedan chair resting on the ground and four of its young, male carriers. The chair sits in front of a wall to a yard, which may be used for storage since barrels are piled up at the rear of the picture. An electric light is installed in a metal archway of the entrance to the yard. This slide comes from a collection held by the Church of Scotland and generated by the medical missionary Charles Somerville, who worked for the London Missionary Society in Hankou from 1904 to 1914
