Missionary compound on Beacon Hill, Fujian, China, ca.1900

A detailed note describing the complex and its surroundings accompanied this photograph. The building on the hilltop is June Cottage. The rear of Morrison Cottage was situated to the right of where this photograph was taken. A stone workman's house is in the foreground. A Chinese laborer can be seen at the entrance. The entire site was cleared for construction over the course of 2000 days labor and was superintended by a Mr. Chen Ding. They had to quarry through solid rock to clear this landing. The site is approx. 800 ft. above sea level. June Cottage was used as a beacon for ships entering the nearby harbor. The note also relates some plans to expand this complex by adding a conference hall, a dormitory, and several terraces.; This photo is from the papers of Emily Susan Hartwell, an American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions missionary stationed in Foochow, Fukien from 1884
