Maryknoll Fathers make procession for Pontifical High Mass at Fushun, China, 1938

This is a photograph of Maryknoll Fathers making a "procession to church for Pontifical High Mass; deacon-Fr. Weiss, sub-deacon-Fr. Coffey, Mgr. Lane, Bishop Walsh, [celebrant], Fr. Burns-master of ceremonies."; Born in Wisconsin, Fr. Weis came to Maryknoll in 1929 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1932. He was assigned to China the same year and labored there for eight years as pastor and rector of the minor Seminary in Fushun, Manchuria. He spent many years after this assignment working in the education field in the United States. -- Born in Pennsylvania, Fr. Coffey came to Maryknoll in 1934 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1937. He was assigned to Fushun, Manchuria, and after internment at the start of the War in 1941 was repatriated to the United States in 1943. He served in many positions in the United States before being assigned to Korea in 1949. Hurt in an auto accident in Korea, he eventually returned to Maryknoll. -- Born in Massachusetts, Bishop Lane came to Maryknoll in 1913 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1920. In 1923 he went to Hong Kong to become the procurator of that mission. Two years later he went north and inaugurated the Fushun mission in Manchuria. In 1932 Monsignor Lane was appointed Prefect Apostolic and in 1940 Vicar Apostolic. He was consecrated a Bishop in 1940. After Pearl Harbor, Bishop Lane was interned by the Japanese in Fushun. Within a year of prepatriation, Bishop Lane was elected to be the third Superior General of Maryknoll. His tenure led to the greatest expansion at home and abroad for Maryknoll. -- Born in Maryland, Fr. Walsh graduated from Mt. St. Mary's College at age 19 and worked two years as a timekeeper in a steel mill. He entered the first class of Maryknoll in 1912 and in 1915 became the second priest ordained in the Society. Three years later. 1918, he was assigned to Kwong Tung (present Guangdong), China. Pope Pius XI named Fr. Walsh as the first Bishop of the Vicariate of Kongmoon. He was consecrated a Bishop in 1927 at Shepherd of the Church on Sancian Island the death place of St. Francis Xavier. In 1936, Bishop Walsh was elected second Superior General following the death of Bishop James A. Walsh
