This is a photograph of Fr. Karlovecius with a class of student. In pre-Red China, students at Dubang mission school would ask Father Karlovecius to help them put a cardboard shrine together when classes were over. Six months after the Reds established their school at the mission, the new students were shouting such names as 'American Devil and throwing stones at him.; Born in Illinois, Fr. Karlovecius came to Maryknoll in 1944 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1948. He departed that same year for Wuchow, South China. In 1951 his mission was taken over by the Communists and he was evicted to Pingnam, China. After eight months of house arrest he was expelled from the country.
