This is a photograph of "Father Hewitt with Lao Li, who makes only a few cents a day. When he gets his hands on a yuan [dollar] with no immediate need for it, he offers it to his pastor. He also hits the pastor up when he has immediate needs and no dollar. He leaves his long TA PU SHAN [gown] at the mission so that when he comes to Mass and Benediction his appearance will be respectful."; Born in Maryland, Fr. Hewitt came to Maryknoll in 1921 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1930. He worked in Fushun, Manchuria for sixteen years and then in 1946 was assigned to the faculty at the Venard minor seminary. He worked in the promotion department and was appointed controller of the public relations department. He retired in California
