McShane was part of the second departure group to travel overseas to China in 1919 where he set up the orphanage for abandoned children in Loting. In May of 1927 an infant dying of smallpox was brought to the orphanage and Fr. McShane contracted the disease while baptizing the infant. He died in June and was buried in front of his rectory. -- Maryknoll, The Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America, was founded in 1911 by Revs. James Anthony Walsh and Thomas Frederick Price to be the main mission outreach of the Roman Catholic Church of the United States. The first group of missioners departed in 1918 for China. Today Maryknoll Priests, Brothers and Sisters are missioned in over 30 countries around the world
