Photograph of five members of the San Francisco Civil Rights Congress (CRC) Citizens Jury during a visit to Los Angeles. During their visit, the Los Angeles CRC hosted a reception for the jurors on Mar. 12, 1952, at a home at 3335 Country Club Drive. The citizens jury was in Los Angeles to view the "Smith Act trials." Enacted in 1940, the Smith Act made it a crime to knowingly or willfully advocate the overthrow of any government in the United States by force or violence. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, citizens in Los Angeles, New York and many other cities throughout the United States were arrested and tried for allegedly violating the Act
