The attitude maintained toward Shelley by the editors of contemporary periodicals is significant in the light it throws upon the prejudices to which the age gave expression. Hidden forces, aiming at a definite goal in the fulfillment of a specified literary and political program, directed the literary criticism of the time quite as much as the political. Party affinity counted more largely than genius for the support an aspiring poet could look for from the literary periodical. This thesis is concerned with a consideration of these prejudices and preferences as exemplified in the critical comment directed against Shelley by the reviewers of the period
