A small but growing body of research looking at the implications of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in correctional populations exists, and it suggests that TBI is a significant problem with serious implications. It appears that the rate of TBI in correctional populations may be significantly higher than that in the general population, and the experience of TBI may contribute to future criminality, violent behavior, poorer mental health, and poor institutional adjustment. However, the absence of a standardized methodology for screening for TBI limits the ability to generalize from the current research.
