In this dissertation, I explore the role of community in the narrative articulation of the self. Recent studies of St. Paul\u27s letters suggest that Paul\u27s statements about justification refer first to Paul\u27s community and only secondarily to the stance of the individual before God. Thus before Paul could speak of himself as a new I he had to reconfigure Israel\u27s narrative so as to articulate the formerly inarticulable, namely, a Messiah who died on a cross. The dissertation seeks to retrieve Paul\u27s communal sense of I in our context.
