User-centred Interaction in Text-Based Image Retrieval

Recently, due to the advancement of Internet and computing technologies, tremendous amount of visual information is increasing rapidly day-by-day. Millions of people access digital images and/or multimedia documents from the Internet daily. Therefore, effective and efficient image retrieval techniques need to be developed that improves the image-searching engines, which can retrieve image in an efficient and accurate method. Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) is an emerging technique that supplies an assortment standard for digital images into easier retrieval based means by image’s features. In relation to CBIR, a usable interface can support effective and efficient image browsing and searching to allow users scan and retrieve interest images rapidly. That is to say, user interface design is a critical step for a successful CBIR system. However, current user interfaces of CBIR systems make most users tired and bewildered, because the users must learn for deploying them effectively. Therefore, usable and effective man-machine interface design is a necessary assignment, in order to improve control tools and navigation function of next new CBIR systems into a faster and easier way. This project is going to design a usable user interface that allows users querying interest images via the Internet by a number of controlled keywords and relevance feedback. Simultaneously, the research will focus on different kinds of keyword and visual based query strategies. A number of different interfaces will be designed and evaluated by users to examine their usability for text-based image retrieval.[[abstract]]近年來，由於網際網路及電腦科技的蓬勃發展，大量的視覺資訊每日不斷快速的增加，成千上 萬的人每天從網際網路中取得數位圖像或多媒體文件，因此，有效且高效能的影像檢索技術需要被 發展，改善圖像搜尋引擎的執行以提供一個有效且精準的方法來檢索圖片。內容式圖像檢索 (Content-Based Image Retrieval) 是一新興的技術，其提供一個分類標準，基於影像特徵，讓數位圖 像能更容易的被檢索。 關於影像檢索，一個合適的介面能夠提供有效且高效能的影像瀏覽及搜尋，讓使用者能快速的 查看或取得他們想要的圖片。也就是說，對於一個成功的影像檢索系統，使用者介面的設計是一個 關鍵的步驟。然而，當前影像檢索系統的介面讓大多數的使用者困惑且厭煩，因為人們必須學習如 何使用它，因此，設計合適且有效的人機介面是一個必要的任務，透過控制原件及導覽功能的提升， 讓下一代的影像檢索系統能更快速且更容易。 此計畫將設計一個合適的使用者介面，其允許使用者經由支配的關鍵詞及相關性回饋於網站介 面中搜尋他們有興趣的圖片。同時，此研究將專注於不同關鍵詞及視覺搜尋策略的結果，幾個不同 互動方式的介面將會被設計，並由使用者評估以審查各互動方式於關鍵詞影像搜尋的可用性
