絵雑誌『コドモノクニ』に現れた子ども像 : 大正・昭和戦前期における-典型として

This article examines the picture magazine Kodomonokuni (the World of Children) published between 1922 and 1944, especially the imagery of children appearing there. In its first years, the magazine was characterized by the respect and exaltation of the childlike mind-though it may rather have been a projection of adults' imagery of children-which reflected a trend of the cultural movement of the time. Then, with the rise of militarism in Japan, such an attitude was denied and the journal was governed by the idea of forming children equipped with willpower. However, under the guise of paraphrases such as "children's imagination", the founding principle of the magazine persisted. Another characteristic of this magazine lay in its drawings. There appeared not only children but also mothers; the magazine also had pages intended for mothers, containing instructions for raising and educating children. Here we can see the emergence of "mother-teachers"
