FORSTERJEV ROMAN A PASSAGE TO INDIA, NJEGOVA PRIMERJAVA S FILMOM A PASSAGE TO INDIA REŽISERJA DAVIDA LEANA IN PRIMERJAVA LEANOVEGA FILMA S FILMOM THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL

India was ruled by the British for almost one hundred years (between 1858 and 1947). E.M Forster visited India several times at the time of British occupation. He observed the relationship between the Indian and the British people in India. His novel A Passage to India was published in 1924. In my diploma paper I will analyze the relationship between the British and the Indians as they are presented in Forster’s novel. The British did not exploit only Indian natural sources, but also Indian people, who had to work for very low salaries and they had almost no civil rights. What follows is the comparison between Forster’s novel and the movie based on the novel A Passage to India. This movie was directed by David Lean in the year 1984. I will focus on the differences in content, character descriptions and also the presentation of the relationship between the British and the Indians. In the last part I will compare Lean’s movie A Passage to India with the movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, directed by John Madden in the year 2012. Both movies take place in India, but in different time period, A Passage to India during the British occupation of India and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel after that. I will try to find similarities and also differences between these two movies, especially in the relationship between the British and Indian people in India.Indija je bila pod angleško vladavino skoraj 100 let (med letoma 1858 in 1947). E.M. Forster je v času angleške vladavine večkrat obiskal Indijo. O odnosih med Indijci in Angleži v Indiji je pisal v romanu Potovanje v Indijo, ki je bil izdan leta 1924. V diplomski nalogi bom analiziral odnose med Indijci in Angleži kot so predstavljeni v Forsterjevem romanu. Angleži niso izkoriščali le naravnega bogastva Indije, ampak tudi domače prebivalce, ki so delali za zelo slabo plačo in so bili skorajda brez državljanskih pravic. Sledi primerjava Forsterjevega romana Potovanje v Indijo s filmom, ki je nastal po knjižni predlogi omenjenega romana. Film je režiral David Lean leta 1984. Osredotočil se bom na razlike v vsebini, opisu karakterjev in tudi na interpretacijo odnosov med Angleži in Indijci. V zadnjem delu bom primerjal Leanov film s filmom The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, katerega je režiral John Madden leta 2012. Oba filma se dogajata v Indiji, ampak v različnem časovnem obdobju. Potovanje v Indijo se dogaja med angleško vladavino Indije, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel pa po angleški vladavini. Poiskal bom podobnosti in razlike med tema filmoma, še posebej v odnosu med Angleži in Indijci v Indiji
