PSYCHOANALYTICAL STUDY OF WILLIAMS\u27 BLANCHE: CASE STUDY OF SNG MARIBOR PRODUCTION OF A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE

Tramvaj Poželenje, ena najvplivnejših dram Tennesseja Williamsa, je bila prvič uprizorjena 1947. Drama je zakladnica za Williamsa značilnih tem in simbolov (nasprotje med šarmom starega ameriškega Juga in novega industrijskega družbenega razreda, ženska seksualnost, norost, osamljenost …) in nepozabnih oseb (Blanche Dubois, Stanley Kowalsky). V SNG Maribor je predstavo režiral Damir Zlatar Frey, ki se je odločil za izrazito psihološki pristop. Kraj dogajanja je preselil na puščavski pesek, ki prekriva oder, zgodbo pa umestil v Blanchino psiho. V diplomski nalogi je predstava analizirana v luči koncepta Freudove psihoanalize. Posebna pozornost je posvečena analizi scene, kostumov, luči, glasbe in odnosov med osebami, z namenom utemeljitve teze, da je vse našteto podrejeno Blanche in je le odsev njenega maničnega doživljanja sveta okoli sebe. Poleg literature o drami in avtorju je bila osrednji vir preučevanja predstava v SNG Maribor in izbrani članki o njej.A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams is one of the most significant twentieth-century plays. When it premiered in 1947, it was an immediate success. Drama is filled with Williams’s recurring themes and symbols (collision between old aristocratic South and new industrial social order, female sexuality, isolation, madness …) and memorable characters (Blanche Dubois, Stanley Kowalsky). In SNG Maribor, A Streetcar Named Desire was directed by Damir Zlatar Frey, who decided to use a distinctive psychoanalytical approach. He transferred New Orleans on to the stage covered with desert sand and inserted the story inside Blanche’s psyche. In the diploma thesis, the production is analysed through the concept of Freud’s psychoanalysis. Scene, costumes, light, music and relationships between characters are completely subordinated to Blanche, they reflect her manic experience of the world that surrounds her. The main source of research, apart from literature about the play and the author, was the SNG production itself and selected newspaper articles about it
