Association analysis of stroke with Triple H (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia): a verification study of national health insurance data in Taiwan

[[abstract]]Taiwan has entered aging society. The risk of stroke grew with aging, especially for the elder population of age 65 and above. In 2007, cerebrovascular disease is the third leading cause of death. In which, stroke has become one of the major diseases bring disability and death. It always needs to spend huge medical expenses and increasing burden for the family and society. This study aimed to analyze the stroke incidence and type distribution regarding the middle-aged population in Taiwan. The relationships between stroke and the three risk factors, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and hyperglycemia were researched and explored respectively. The data from Taiwan National Health Insurance database was adopted. At first, we used the ICD_9 codes of stroke to extract the patients with stroke, the same amount patients without stroke were sampling randomly. For these patient samples, disease status regarding hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and hyperglycemia were defined with corresponding ICD_9 codes. Statistical methods were applied in these patient samples to estimate the stroke risk regarding hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and hyperglycemia. Our results showed that the patients with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, or hyperglycemia have higher risk to suffer stroke than the patients without hypertension, hyperlipidemia, or hyperglycemia. In other words, to control the three high risk factors can reduced the probability of stroke, effectively reduce the consumption of medical resources, and improve the health quality of life
