The Perspectives of the Managers on the Space Setting Issues of the Long Term Care Instirutes

[[abstract]]With the increase of the aging population, the number of long term care institution for older people is growing too. There are about 1,400 long term care institutions in Taiwan, and most of them are private. Moreover, those managers of these institutions are mainly in charge of space designing and setting regulations for the institutions. However, there is much less discussion on deconstructing their concept of space design and difficulties. The study aims to explore what will influence the managers to design space. The method used in this thesis is based on survey-questionnaire. It uses stratified random sample of those nursing houses, long term care institutions and sanatoriums in the north, middle and south of Taiwan, during the three months of interviewing assist survey. The result showed that the most important consideration for managers in designing institutions spaces to take is infection prevention and the function of accidental facilities. The second one is spaces for health. And the most difficult part for them is to implement equipments to prevent accidental infection, and the second one is the social activities. Besides, the employed part-time managers who are more than 66 years has more difficulties to configure the space; on the contrary, the managers who are separated marital status as divorced, services organization of more than 20 years of executive experience, with agencies or other nursing houses, private types and the building is a mixed type, is the extent of implementation of spatial configuration easier. This study suggested that the government should set the courses of space design mostly for those older managers of institutions, or hold mutual forums in order to know what situations and problems the institutions could have. In addition, the government should encourage managers to participate in those courses by rewarding them; consequently the institution’s spaces will be, and makes comfortable for managers and people who need care
