The center of the economic sciences in the CPRâthe Institute of Economics, Academy of Sciences of the Chinese People's Republicâwas created at the end of 1952. At first it consisted only of two departmentsâthe History of Economics, and a department dealing with economic problems. The Institute has grown considerably under the People's Government. There are now about 110 scientists on its staff (as opposed to 30 in 1952) who work in nine departments: Political Economy, History of the National Economy, History of Economic Thought, Distribution of Production Forces, Industrial Economics (created in 1956), Agricultural Economics, Economics of the Domestic Crafts Industry, Finance and Trade, and World Economics.
