Big Drop In Flu Cases; Care Needed

169 cases reported to the health department yesterday, the lowest figure to date. 17 deaths werereported yesterday. 'The total of new cases for six days this week is 1894 as compared with 3820 for theprevious seven days. Deaths from influenza and pneumonia for the last six days aggregate 163, while for theseven days of last week 178 were reported.' Dr. Powers urged the public to remain vigilant and take allprecautions. He stated: "We must remember that at the present time nearly 5000 persons in Los Angeles aresuffering from the disease and they must not be permitted to spread it. It is all right to say, "don't be scared" butwith a record of 55,000 cases and nearly 3000 deaths the man who is not afraid of influenza is foolish." The CityCouncil declined to provide funds requested by the Board of Education to pay for medical inspectors arguingthat it should come from the school moneys. The fines for failing to report flu cases have been increased today.The Council also passed an ordinance for physicians to post flu signs as soon as cases are identified. 'Dr.Harold H. Smith, with offices in the Van Nuys Building, who pleaded guilty to failure to report a case ofpneumonia, was fined $10 by Judge Chambers.'Newspaper article
