Portland Schools To Start Work Monday

• School starts on Monday for 36,000 children and 1,100 teachers. • The epidemic closed schools in Portland for five weeks or twenty-six school days. • With the exception of the first, second, and third grades, all classes will begin at 8:30 AM and not 8:45 AM as before. • Teachers are allowed to report fifteen minutes later than before, at 8:15 AM. Administrators assume that with the earlier start students will not congregate before school and therefore will not need supervision by teachers. • The new schedule will be kept in place until the classwork is caught up. Superintendant Grout guesses that the previous schedule will be reinstated in early April. Mr. Grout says that this time of year (when the weather is not as pleasant) is good study weather and proves to be “more efficient.” “Suppressed energy after a five weeks’ vacation, coming so near the opening of the school year and the close of the Summer vacation, will also result in greater accomplishment.”• Because the danger from influenza is not over, classroom windows will be left open during recesses and during the majority of study hours. Students may wear outdoor garments, if necessary, and physical exercises intended to promote good circulation and increase body warmth will be performed often. • School room windows were left open during the epidemic and all rooms have been washed with a strong disinfectant called “coro-noleum.” Children are to be instructed in hygiene according to a manual created by Pittsburg public schools. • High school principals are meeting today at the Courthouse to create a plan for military and physical drills in schools. • All public school principals will meet with Grout on November 23rd.Newspaper article1
