Rigid Quarantine in Newark Is Ordered

• Last night, the Mayor Gillen ordered department of public safety director William J. Brennan and police commissioner McEnroe to enforce the closure order• Today, W. J. Brennan and McEnroe consulted the city attorney to determine the extent of their powers• McEnroe then announced that the police would rigidly enforce the closure order• The City Commission, at Gillen’s request, appropriated $100,000 to cover the costs of opening and equipping emergency hospitals for influenza patients• Yesterday Gillen wrote to W.J. Brennan, directing him that while saloons would be closed to bar sales, bottled liquor could still be sold under doctor’s prescription• W. J. Brennan, however, has ignored Gillen’s letter• In separate statements made by both the Gillen and W. J. Brennan, people have been warned that they will be subject to arrest and prosecution if they violate the closure order• Street car operators have been directed to avoid crowding• Gillen also ordered all schools (public, private, and parochial) to close; however, the Board of Education is the only body with authority to do so• The schools will probably be closed tomorrow at noon, after the Board of Ed meets tonight• Supt of Schools Dr. Corson has ordered that evening schools be closed until at least Oct. 21• At a meeting on Monday it was decided that the schools should remain open, but since then the epidemic has added many cases• Inspections in the downtown area indicates that the closure order is being followed• 917 new cases in last 24 hours• 86 cases of pneumonia developed in last 24 hours• 7,221 total cases reported since flu made reportable• Gillen’s recommendation that side doors of saloons be kept open for prescription liquor sales will not be upheld by the police, who will enforce the order completely• Police Commissioner Brennan stated that it would be impossible to allow Gillen’s recommendation, as it would require police at every saloon to check for prescriptions, and that prescription liquor can be obtained elsewhere without violating the order• Liberty Loan outdoor meetings must be stoppedNewspaper article1,
