150 Cases of Influenza in Minneapolis

• Civil, military and school officials declared last night that influenza is making headway in Minneapolis• 150 cases in the city were reported, principally among soldiers and practically all of the latter have been taken to the Fort Snelling hospital. • Dr. H.M. Guilford, City Health Commissioner said that the epidemic is beginning to reach into civilian life, reporting 3 or 4 civilian cases• 108 cases at Fort Snelling hospital transferred from training detachments at the University of Minnesota and from the military detachment Dunwoody• 30 cases at University hospital, 10 of the cases are nurses• Dr. H.M Guilford says that common towels should be removed from wash rooms; “some sanitary drinking fountains in Minneapolis are worse than the old-style common drinking cup”; crowds should be avoided as far as business will permit; victims should be isolated in their homes by doctors or the family• Dr. John Sundwell, Health Commissioner at the University of Minnesota issued a statement on conditions at the University• Physical examinations of S.A.T.O. continue despite the influenza. 1500 men have been examined and only 3 or 4 percent have been rejected• Dr. Sundwell said that “the influenza epidemic among the soldiers at the University of Minnesota is well under control. Lieut. Cooke, chief medical officer, is searching out from the ranks all men who show the slightest symptoms. These are immediately isolated. The detachment is a quarantine and not permitted to associate in any way with civilians”• Dr. Sundwell emphasized that the situation at the University is not at all serious and that postponement of enrollment was only a precautionary move.
