Malady Stalks Among Children

• Health Officer William Peters announced that out of 103 cases reported to Health Dept. yesterday, over half were children ages 3-14.• 12 deaths yesterday• 20 of the cases were from Sayler Park, where there have been 76 new cases in the past three days• St. Mark’s School closed yesterday until next Monday due to influenza; school authorities said that 150 students were sick with influenza. St. Mark’s was the second parochial school to close, in addition to St. Pius School.• Public school authorities have added an extra day of holiday to Thanksgiving break for students, because “health and school authorities agreed that an added day’s vacation will have a beneficial result in the influenza situation.”• Thanksgiving exercises in schools were held in classrooms, not the auditoriums, to prevent crowds.• Yesterday, Fire Chief Barney J. Houston ordered firemen to stop accepting clothing for the White Elephant rummage sale until “all danger of influenza has passed.”• 21 new cases among city firemen, 9 firemen were sent to GH within last two days• 2 civilians were working at Fire Company 29 to take the place of absent firemen temporarily.• Superintendent of General Hospital Dr. Walter List 213 cases now at GH, 56 of which have pneumonia• Councilman Theodore Anders of the 24th Ward, contracted influenza yesterday.Newspaper article
