Influenza Toll Shows Increase

• An increase was shown in the number of deaths from the pneumonia plague (Spanish influenza) while the city hospital and emergency hospital [Hope Rescue Mission] reported a decrease in the number of new cases• There were no official records taken yesterday of the number of new cases on account of the city health department being closed• The unofficial report of undertakers yesterday shows 26 deaths, an increase of five over yesterday• Several undertakers were too busy too busy to provide data on new cases• A number of the victims were children and at least three Negroes. The death rate among Negroes has been exceptionally low and few cases have been reported among them• Dr. R.B. Norment believes the public telephone is a menace as many persons leave a sick room to call a physician• 12 new cases were admitted at the city hospital yesterday and seven persons were discharged• 6 persons died within 24 hours (city hospital)• Three deaths at the emergency hospital [Hope Rescue Mission] and eight new cases were brought in• The law requires burial within 24 hours of persons dying of influenzaNewspaper article
