The Nurses Must Enroll

• Southern Division of the American Red Cross asks for an immediate report of city and county nurses available for epidemic service with influenza• Nine nurses responded to the canvas, of which two volunteered for service anywhere, the remainder saying they would volunteer for local or state service• The number falls short of that expected• “It is the desire of the local committees of Red Cross nursing service to have every nurse who feels the responsibility of her profession to respond when the demands of the government are made.” • Eight city nurses have only enrolled for home defense work; two of these are married• There are 27 other married nurses who could contribute something to the cause• 18 city nurses are regularly enrolled in the Red Cross (some are locally employed, some are placed at other points, and some are in the foreign service.)• The government will need 8,000 more nurses before Jan. 1Newspaper article
