Influenza Epidemic, Apparently Unchecked, Adds 55 R. I. Deaths

• 55 more deaths across the state, but the situation appears to be improving in Newport• Health authorities believe that once the effects of the closure order begin to be felt, there will be an improvement in the epidemic situation• An emergency committee was appointed Friday afternoon by a meeting of medical authorities at the State House that day• The committee is comprised of Dr. N. Darrell Harvey (chair), Dr. Charles V. Chapin, Dr. George E. Collins, and Dr. John E. Donley• Yesterday the Rhode Island Hospital added 75 beds; St. Joseph’s added 25, with ability to add 40 more if necessary• The Hope Hospital cannot offer beds to influenza patients because it is dedicated to acute surgical work, but it will offer the services of its nurses’ home and billiard room if necessary• Rhode Island School of Design has stopped classes as of yesterday• Night schools were opened yesterday, but will be closed as of today in keeping with the Board’s closure orderNewspaper article1,
