Flu Orders Start Moderating Today

• Rockwood began partially lifting the bans yesterday• Beginning today, downtown business will be allowed to remain open until 6 pm instead of 4:30 pm• Churches will be allowed to hold one service next Sunday morning• Following a meeting with acting Supt. Jones, Rockwood announced that he would definitely allowing the reopening of schools during the early part or middle of next week if there is no turn for the worse in influenza conditions; the board of education, however, may decided to keep schools closed indefinitely; Member B.D. Quarrie expressed fear yesterday at a meeting that schools would resume too early and President M.L. Thompson said he would rather see the reopening delayed than come too soon; the board will hold a special meeting after Rockwood gives his permission to reopen to determine whether they will send children back to class• The only objection Rockwood would have to reopening schools on Monday is the fact that it would deprive the influenza efforts of the help of the school nurses, the Catholic sisters, and the school teachers; he also said that this women need 3 or 4 days’ rest before returning to normal duty• The opening of schools, Rockwood intimated, would be accompanied by the lifting of all other restrictions• Over 3,000 people have been served warm food from the six food centers established by the Red Cross and the mayor’s advisory war board; 704 families have been served; no new centers are currently to be established because of the improved conditions, but the Red Cross Motor Corps called for volunteers to assist in the distribution of food; volunteers should contact Mrs. R.B.
