Ban May Stay Unless Death Rate Lowers

• State health commissioner B. Franklin Royer indicates that the state policy ban may be expected to continue should the death rate warrant conditions remain the same; Royer says death rate must remain below 100 by Saturday• State influenza reports indicate the death rate has ranged from 170 to 175 per day over the past several days• Recent reports indicate there were 41 deaths reported with 68 the preceding day; 15 from pneumonia, 25 from complications of influenza and pneumonia, and 1 from true influenza• Today's report indicates 247 new cases of influenza with 48 new cases of pneumonia• Policy: In a letter to Mayor Babcock, the Theatre Managers' Association has decided to honor the state health department and comply with orders to not reopen until Saturday• 48 violators of the state health policy ban have had their hearings postponed until next Tuesday morning• The office of the alderman reports that additional charges may be filed against other violators, as well• The city of Pittsburgh has had 18,135 cases of influenza with 3,100 deaths and a morbidity rate of less than 3 percent and a case mortality rate of 1.6%• Philadelphia reports indicate 150,000 cases and over 11,000 deaths and a morbidity rate of 9 percent and a case mortality rate of 7%• According to Dr. Shaffle, some districts in the county are likely to remain under quarantine after the policy bans are lifted Saturday, including the town of Oakdale which has been hardest hit• County reports indicate 592 new cases of influenza; Braddock has 24; McKersport, 53; Rankin, 35; Edgeworth, 11; Tarentum, 22; East Deer Township, 7; Calamity Hill, 109; Bellevue, 263; and Oakdale has 1,000 cases of influenza, with 400 cases of pneumonia and 8 deaths• Policy: the funeral ban remains in the city of Pittsburgh; there will be no public funerals• The funeral ban is expected to extend at least a week beyond Saturday• City director of health Mayor W.H.
