The results of a theoretical and experimental study on the role of aerodynamically-induced fluctuating forces in the sound generation by axial-flow compressors are presented. Analytical models for the generation and radiation of sound by rotor/stator combinations were developed. For the experimental substantiation of the analytical results, the technology was developed to measure fluctuating forces directly on rotating airfoils using miniature differential-pressure sensors and FM telemetry.
