Where a structural analysis can be produced for a musical artefact, variants of the artefact can often be obtained by `inverting\u27 the analysis, in much the same way we produce novel sentences from a grammar. The paper describes use of information theory for purposes of deriving structural analyses of sequences, and shows how the method can be used with musical data, for purposes of generating novel musical patterns
