Fakat kullanıldıkları ortamlarda MgO-C refrakterlerin bünyesindeki karbon çok kolay oksidasyona uğrayabilmektedir. Bunu önlemek için refrakter bünyesine antioksidan denilen oksitlenmeye yatkın metaller veya bileşikler ilave edilir. Antioksidanlar çeşitli bileşikler oluşturarak refrakterin porozitesini düşürüp karbonu oksitlenmeye karşı korurlar.
