The history of electric power generation and distribution in Ottawa reflects the city's political, economic, and environmental conditions. The process of electrification of the Canadian capital was shaped by strong personalities, by municipal, provincial and federal politics, and by the city's location on the Ottawa River, an interprovincial border. The idea of electrification was introduced by municipal politicians in 1880s as a way of redefining Ottawa as a 'power capital of the Dominion' rather than as the locus of the federal bureaucracy.
