The vapor phase air oxidation of propene and 2-methylpropene to acrolein and methacrolein was investigated in an isothermal integral flow reactor at atmospheric pressure between 300 and 500°C. The skeleton catalyst (copper oxide) supported on pumice stone or inactivated alumina was modified in a constant and continuous supply of trace amounts of selenium, sulfur, bromine, chlorine and iodine, all having the electronegativities higher than that of copper. The effect of various process variables, namely the weight ratio of modifier to olefin in the feed, the feed ratio of oxygen to olefin, reaction temperature and the reciprocal of space velocity, on the conversion of olefin and the product distribution was determined by gas chromatograph...
