Background. Approximately four minion individuals in the United States are infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). The relative risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with hepatitis C-related cirrhosis is at least 7 to 10 times that of the general population. The majority of patients who develop symptoms from HCC harbour tumors that are at an advanced and rapidly fatal stage. Screening has therefore been advocated as a mean of reducing cancer-related deaths. Objective.
