Further research is needed to discover a process of avoiding the development of loneliness. Research on loneliness has been hampered by its strong association with depression. These two states are substantially correlated. In order to predict the development of depression in college students, therefore, variables that link to loneliness are in need of being identified. Such variables may include gender, age, race/ethnicity, academic success, social contacts/networking activity, dating, and personality type. This research will measure the correlation of these variables with loneliness by using the UCLA Loneliness Scale, third edition, through an online survey called Survey Monkey.
