Previous spectroscopic studies on prototypical aromatic chromophores of lignin have been performed to gain both an understanding of how lignin interacts with ultra violet light and how changing the location and types of substituents affect its spectroscopy. 2-methoxyresorcinol shares many of the same structural features as these lignin components, but differs in the number and relative positions of the OH and OCH3 units on the ring. Understanding the spectroscopy of 2-methoxyresorcinol can thus contribute to our understanding of the electronic properties of lignin.
