The operating procedure for extraction of leaf soluble sugars with methanol-chloroform-water from Dickson & Larson (1975) required different steps using water. Our initial hypothesis was that this water was able to exchange some oxygen atoms with the soluble sugars, thus altering their oxygen isotope signature (d18OS). Therefore the objective of this study was to test the influence of the water used for the extraction on d18OS.
