[[abstract]]This paper presents a. new method for converting binary-to-BCD and BCD-to-binary using up/down counters. This method ia compared with Couleur’a two-step process and also with Rhyne's one-step process. If the slow speed operation is not critical, the implementation of the proposed converter is very easy. The circuit is also quite flexible. A synchronous four-bit up/down counter (binary as well as decade) is available from the shelf in one package. These counters can be cascaded without need for external circuitry. This conversion is reversible without changing the circuitry or circuit elements, simply by changing the mode control equal to low or high level.
